![]() Even a little dull, really! I certainly wasn't on the edge of my seat. Their relationship certainly progresses much more believably than the all-over-the-map emotions of the previous books. Rainier has a troubled past, including that stint in prison, but the book at least attempts to follow his journey from ex-con to a man who can take his place back in society. It's totally a case of insta-love, but unlike the heroines of the previous three books, Laura Blade actually seems to have her shit together, and isn't constantly blowing hot and cold towards Rainier. ![]() Motivations of the "bad" guys are predictably obscure and flimsy, but at the least the romance works reasonably well. I think this gets 2 stars simply because it's better than the previous three books. ![]() There's also the matter of a dead body discovered on the ranch, opening up a cold case! Threatening their happiness is a mighty tax bill generated against them by family enemy William Poe, who is still inexplicably walking around a free man despite evidence that he was getting his half-brother to commit crimes for him. Rainier Fitzgerald gets released from prison and immediately starts to get jiggy with it with his parole officer, Laura Blade. ![]()

So how does an author take the principles of Moneyball and apply them to yearly earnings? Money-making in writing actually may be kind of boring and less flashy. In other words, what you assume will work doesn’t always make steady income. This, of course, is a very simplified version of the narrative, but you get the idea. ![]() And then they completely changed their strategy based on which players could make it on base. ![]() Instead, mavericks looked at boring (but important!) statistics. Someone finally questioned the status quo, the way baseball always spent money on talent. In the movie, Moneyball, ( based on a true story and this book) we see a math person dismantle gut instinct. In fact, in Publishers Weekly’s 150th anniversary edition this month, I was struck at how few authors actually make a successful living.Īround 100 authors worldwide make millions, but the rest of authors make $6,o80 (all authors, full- and part-time) or $20,300 (full-time authors only) per year based on this research from The Author’s Guild. What I’ve seen is that it’s very difficult to make a sustained income as a writer. Like many of you, I’ve been operating in this space as an author for many years, and now I have the privilege of being an agent. ![]() ![]() ![]() Many of the issues are presented and relationships established too quickly without warranted character development or backstory. ![]() Unfortunately, both the narration and the plot execution are uneven. Alternating between Jake’s real-time plight and Sawyer’s journal leading up to his heinous act, this novel tackles mental illness, rejection, and loneliness. Unexpectedly befriended by an unusual student and the new boy at school, Jake finds that he must face the menace that only he knows is supernatural. Jake appears to be a perfect vessel for Sawyer’s rage and terror. Instead of finding peace in death, his spirit reaches for power, justice, and revenge. Sawyer, now dead, shot and killed several classmates and then himself. Gr 7 Up–Jake, who is gay, one of the few Black students at his exclusive private school, and a medium who interacts with spirits, is derided by teachers and bullied by classmates. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Comparing the map in The Wind in the Willows to a map of her local terrain is one thing: comparing her first act of performing cunnilingus to entering Homer's cave of Polyphemus made me groan out loud. Bechdel continuously draws parallels to anything and everything literary. The constant literary references (Joyce, Camus, Proust, Wilde, etc) do not impress me and they do not enrich the story she is telling. She doesn't make me care about her, and I care only a little bit about her dad, whom the book focuses on. The key to this is good writing, and although Bechdel's writing is ORNAMENTAL, it's not engaging. This is how I feel: any person, no matter how mediocre his/her life might be perceived, can be made into a great story. However, this is not a review of The Song of Solomon, so I suppose I will set aside that grudge for now. To put it in less crude terms, both books overflow with self-conscious references to classic literature (both use The Odyssey in a major way). Reading Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic put me in the same irritated and impatient mood experienced when reading Toni Morrison's The Song of Solomon in high school: both books feel like major wank-offs to the writers' cumulative reading endeavors. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Emma has an impossible decision on her hands when the husband she thought was dead reappears and expects her to go back to him as though nothing happened and no time was lost.
